Angeleno Magazine Celebrates 7 at H.D. Buttercup

Last night was Angeleno magazine’s 7th anniversary party. It was thrown in the unlikely but perfect location of H.D. Buttercup in Culver City, a vast warehouse containing the wares of 50 vendors. This night the mag was offering guests Belvedere cocktails and an array of desserts amid the Turkish rugs and modern furniture.

Home, James: Him, You Can Drunk Dial

Contrary to popular belief, I’m actually not a big drinker. Since two cocktails is usually my limit, I inevitably end up being the designated driver for my friends. But ever since I heard about Home James, I’m gonna say, “Screw you guys, I’m gettin’ drunk!” Just kidding, no I’m not, but it’s nice to know…

James Brown & the Bowl: Pretty Spry for an Old Guy

Checking out Angie Stone and James Brown at the Bowl might have been the most surreal Bowl experience I’ve had yet. First, that is a 73-year-old man shaking his groove thang up there. Second, that’s the Godfather of Soul up there. And third, is that James Brown doing “The Running Man”? And the surrealness was…

Minotaure: Seeing Red, Feeling Nothing

Hearing that the new tapas restaurant and wine bar, Minotaure, opened up in Chloe’s old space left me feeling like I found a hidden gem. A high-profile chef, flamenco dancers and over 30 different Spanish tapas every night on the lonely stretch of Culver Boulevard? It sounded promising.

Film Review: Jason Statham on Crank

*Sorta spoiler to follow* Public sex in the middle of crowded Chinatown, bike jacking a motorcycle cop, taking on a bar full of big black guys, driving through an indoor mall pursued by cops–don’t stop cuz you’ll die. Don’t think either because then you won’t enjoy the ride. Crank is Speed except instead of the…

TONIGHT: Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players

My sister was the one whose reach all the way from Japan pushed my bro and me to check out the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players when they played the Viper Room several years ago, even though neither of us had heard of them before or knew what they were about. But we trusted her unfailing good,…

In a World Where Movies Are Cheap…

Flickr Shot by optionthis When I went to see This Gun for Hire and The Blue Dahlia double feature at the New Beverly Cinema the other day, I was instantly charmed by the no-frills theatre and reminded of a time when catching a flick was a low-cost night out. Sure, there’s no stadium seating, attentive ushers…

Restaurants That Make Me Go "Umm…"

Flickr Shot by ‘stpiduko’ The grossest thing I ever ate, and not on purpose? When I devoured half of a very organic nutrition bar I purchased from the convenience store in my office building, only to find out, as I was about to bite into the other half, that it was in fact infested with…

Banksy's 3-Day Vandalized Warehouse Extravaganza

No one knows where he will strike but prolific stencil graffiti artist Banksy (aka Robert Banks) from Bristol, England, will make a much anticipated “Barely Legal” L.A. appearance (or at least his work will) on September 15-17 at a super secret location that won’t be disclosed until the day of the event. Check his site September 15 to find out where….
